New York Trip Day 3 - Toronto

On Saturday, we drove up to Toronto. We started the day at the Toronto Temple to give Ashley and Tyler the chance to do baptisms in a different country. Danny went in with them and I hung out with Camden on the temple grounds.

After they got done in the temple (which only took about 40 minutes) we went into the church building that was next to the temple so they could change their clothing. We decided to buy the City Pass for Toronto that day. It gave us the option to see 5 different tourist attractions in the City. We knew we wanted to visit 2 of them, Casa Loma and the CN Tower. We decided to start with those 2 and then see what else we would have time for.

Casa Loma is the only Castle in North America. It was big, 4 stories plus towers, and stables located at the end of an underground tunnel. We walked through almost all of it and used the online self-guided tour to learn a little bit about some of the rooms.

This hawk was just chilling up there while we were up on one of the towers. We ended up climbing up both towers because the first one we went up was not in the open air, so we had to try the one with the open air, too. The staircase up was skinny, steep, and windy. It made me kind of dizzy.
There was this random wax museum of different celebrities above the stables. We found this wax figure of Paul Walker, which I thought was funny and so random since he isn't that big of a celebrity.
After Casa Loma, we got directions to "Nom, Nom, Nom Poutine." Before we even researched things to do in Toronto, we knew that we wanted to get some poutine while we were there. I researched where to find the best poutine in Toronto and this is the place that got the best reviews. What I didn't know was that it was a permanent food truck right across the street from a homeless encampment. We got 3 different kinds for 4 of us to eat and Tyler got something from another food truck. We ordered one with pulled pork on it, an extra cheese, and one with bacon. Ashley was super excited about the extra cheese.
Tyler is our pickiest eater, so as we started to investigate the other food trucks around to see which one he would be willing to eat from, he ended up choosing the Filipino food truck that was right next to the poutine food truck. He ordered Lumpia with pork. Alyssa was excited that he tried them and liked them when we told her about it.

On a side note, the drive over to the poutine food truck was insane. We had no idea that Toronto would be like driving through lower Manhattan. The traffic was crazy, the drivers were rude, and we had a scary moment when we realized that the cable train ahead of us would be sharing the road with us. One of the 2 lanes on our side of the road had train tracks on it and the other lane would randomly have parked cars in it. So you can imagine how fun that was for Danny to navigate. And then as we got close to the CN Tower, the buildings became super tall around us and there were pedestrians on every corner. Finding parking was also a struggle because our rental car was an F150 and it didn't fit in most of the parking garages. When we eventually found a parking garage that would work and parked, we headed over to the CN Tower. We had an appointment to enter at a time that we thought would be easy to make, but we ended up being a little late. It wasn't a problem; they still let us in. Danny, Camden, and Ashley loved the tower. Tyler and I were pretty anxious the whole time we were up there. The elevator ride up had two glass walls so we could see ourselves shoot 1500 ft in the air. The floor also had glass panels. But there were so many people shoved in the elevator that it was hard to see that. And I had a prime spot next to the window but kept my back to it. I really didn't care to see how high we were going as we were hanging from elevator cables.

We wished the skies had been a little more clear while we were up there, but we could still see pretty far.
The craziest parts of the tower were these glass bottom areas. Danny, Ashley, and Camden had fun on them. Tyler and I stayed far away from that. I have never done well standing on see through surfaces that are up high. That includes glass bottoms and metal catwalks.

There were some fun designs on the window as you walked around. We liked the maple leaf the best.
LOL, Tylers face here. He did not like standing that close to the window.

I was so disappointed that there were only 3 spots here and I had to be the camerawoman, LOL.
Tyler and I were happy to be back on the ground again.
We had a little of time still after getting off of the tower, so we went into the Ripley's Believe it or not Aquarium. It was located at the base of the CN tower. The aquarium was super crowded though, so we walked through it pretty quickly, not wanting to wait for crowds. This big fish tank at the center was pretty cool.

Our legs were so tired by this point, and we were all thirsty, so we decided not to use the city pass for any other things. It also had admission to the Toronto Zoo, a ride on a boat tour, and admission into an art museum. We knew the zoo would be too much walking and that the kids would be bored on the boat tour. And we didn't even consider doing the art museum, just not our thing. After the aquarium, we headed back to our car and fought the traffic to get out of the city. Before we crossed over the border, we stopped at a convenience store and got some sodas and Canadian candy. Everyone got to choose one that was different from American candy. I think everyone was happy with their choices. We shared a bit to be able to try multiple kinds. The drive back to our hotel felt long, but Ashley was occupied with a live stream of her favorite you tube channel (it was their birthday that day, so they did a live stream to celebrate). We relaxed at the hotel that night. I think the boys swam again, but I can't remember for sure.
