We really enjoyed staying in Point Roberts. The house we stayed in was super cute. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck and staring at the water. We noticed on the first day we were there that there were 2 eagles perched up in the tree between us and the water. We thought it was so cool to see them so close. We learned after our week there that they were in the tree more often than not.
The sunsets were pretty incredible from the back deck.
On one of our days there, we decided to stay close to home and explore the things around us. We started with the things right off the property. Danny and I walked along the path behind our house to see if there was a way down to the beach. The booklet in the home said that there was beach access, but the stairs had been washed out recently and they were not sure when they would be repaired. We never found a pathway to stairs (besides the stairs right behind our rental home that went down to locked cabins. There was no beach access though, without going through the cabins). So we drove to some of the beaches that were suggested in the book. It said that Point Roberts had 4 public beaches and they were basically located in the 4 corners of the peninsula. We tried Lily Point first. It had some trails through the trees and a hiking trail down to the beach.
The beach had a lot of moss covered rocks and little crabs. It said to keep Lula on leash, but there was no one else on the beach, so we let her run.
Most of the crabs we saw were alive, but there were a couple of really big crabs that were not alive.
The kids also waded out and found starfish on this rock. We didn't think Lula was a water dog, but she apparently loves the ocean. She had no problem wading into the water on any of the beaches.
We noticed after standing on the beach that the green mossy rocks would spit up water every once in a while. We aren't really sure what caused it, but it was pretty interesting.
It was a mile hike down to the beach and a mile back up so we were all worn out after getting back. We tried to go to another beach that afternoon, but it was pretty rocky and did not have any parking near it. We headed over to lighthouse beach that afternoon. It wasn't a swimming beach. It had some walking trails and a boat launch. We read that it is also a good place to see whales and other sea life. Sure enough, there were a bunch of sea animals out in the water showing themselves. We thought they were dolphins at first and then thought they looked more like whales. But they were too small...baby whales, maybe? But shouldn't there have been mama whales nearby. We were so confused so I asked a lady that we passed on the trail if she was a local. She was and told me that they were harbor porpoises. There were so many of them.
The eagles were in the tree all week. We had to laugh when we saw smaller black birds swooping down towards the eagles over and over. We didn't know what they were doing, so we looked it up. It is called mobbing. They do it to either chase the eagle away if it is too close to their home or to show off for a mate. We are not sure why this one was doing it here because we could clearly see that the eagles were always in that tree.
Ashley and I went back to Lily point later in the week and took a little trail that came right up to the edge of a cliff. It is so hard to tell from the pictures, but that is like a 200 ft drop off behind us.
And Lula was not scared to go right up to the edge.
We also saw this really big tree there.
We put dinner in the crock pot on one of the days we were there and came home to find there was no liquid in the crock pot, and the meat was dried out. We were so confused how that happened. Danny tried to soak the bowl of it and a big chunk of the crock pot bowl just broke off. We also noticed that there was a lot of liquid on the countertop. The only thing we can think of is that the crock pot bowl had a tiny crack and leaked everything out, which also made it easy to break.
The front of the house, right before we left. Lula loved all of the space to run around on the property. She found a rabbit on the first day and had to check on it every time we let her outside, but it always ran away from her and hid under a bush before she could get it. We also got a bit nervous on the first day when one of the eagles swooped down towards her. We researched and learned that an eagle can only lift up to about 15 pounds though, so we figured she was safe from them.
We were so sad to leave our vacation home. It was perfect for our stay. The only downside to it was that a lot of the things to do on my list of things I researched were in the downtown area of Vancouver and that was about an hour away from the home.
