Family Photo Shoot

About a week before Alyssa left, we got family pictures taken. We usually get this done about every other year, but who knows when then next time will be. We were happy with how they turned out.

The photographer was so good with the kids, especially Tyler who refuses to look at the camera in any pictures we take of him. At one point she even threatened to add a mustache to his picture if he didn't look at the camera. And then this was the first shot in the gallery.

I love looking at these pictures and preserving that time in my memory when all of my kids were home with us. We may never have that again.

 

Tyler Receives the Priesthood

On January 5, Tyler was ordained to the office of a deacon. Alyssa was 2 days away from leaving for the Philippines and Tyler was happy to have her there still. Gawbie and Grandpa were able to come, too. This was one of our last family pictures together before Alyssa left.

We moved the bishopric along quickly with Tyler's temple recommend, because Alyssa wanted to be able to go with Tyler the first time he went. We thought we would have a couple of weeks to fit it in, but with the change to Alyssa's MTC and start date, we had the morning of the 7th to have them go. We had to be to the airport at noon. So Alyssa, Ashley, Tyler, and Danny headed off to the temple at 6:30 am that morning and were back home with enough time for us to sit around and enjoy the last couple of hours with Alyssa. He enjoyed the temple and has been back multiple times since.

The first time he passed the sacrament was in the YSA ward. They gave him the easiest route and he did a good job with it. It was cute to see him standing up there with all of the YSA's. We are still getting used to having him in the young mens, but he seems to be enjoying it.
 

Summing Up the Holidays

Grandpa Miner came to visit the week of Thanksgiving. We took him with us to see "Wicked/" 

We went up to Steve and Pam's for Thanksgiving dinner. We played some football in the morning (not Grandpa), ate good food and enjoyed visiting with their family. We didn't have a chance to play 1 high.

Danny and I got to attend a Christmas party with Explore Utah Valley. They held their party at The Grid this year, which is an indoor racing track that uses electric cars. We had never been before, so it was fun to try it out.

We worked on a lot of puzzles during the holidays. I had just exchanged a bunch of kids puzzles for grown up puzzles, so we had a lot to choose from.

The boys made gingerbread houses one of the nights that Danny and Ashley were working.

We had fun at the YSA Christmas party. The boys liked the photo booth and wanted a few pictures with the different props.

On the last day of school before Christmas break, Ashley got to perform with her Improv class. It was fun to see her demonstrate some of the things she had learned over the past semester.

More puzzles...

We went to Beauty and the Beast at the Hale Center theater right after Christmas. Everyone loved the show. The Hale always does an incredible job with their shows.

I don't have any pictures of this, but for Alyssa's birthday we gave her the gift of individual time with each of us. We each chose a place to eat and an activity to do with her. These included ice skating, an arcade, a mini escape room, a massage, and racecars. We all chose her favorite restaurants to eat at, too.  Shortly before Christmas, we found out that Alyssa's start date and MTC was changing from what her call said. She would be going straight to the MTC in the Philippines. This meant we would have 8 fewer days with her before she left and she would not be in Provo for those first 7ish weeks of her mission. This was a bit of a shock to all of us, but we adjusted our thinking. Her farewell was on December 29th.

Mary Poppins ar American Heritage

 The weekend after I got back from New York, was Ashley's school play. This one was kind of a disappointment, though. There were so many students in the play, that they were unable to put all of the students on the play for every group number. As a result, Ashley was only in 4 songs, which did not include "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" or "Step in Time/" I guess the good thing about it was that she didn't have to go to as many rehearsals. But it also meant she was only in like 15 minutes of the 3 hour play. She got to be a lady with a baby in a couple of the scenes. She was supposed to have an old fashioned baby stroller, but they couldn't find one, so she ended up having to hold the baby which she said got tiring. Here are some pictures from the play.

She did a good job in the parts she was on stage and it was fun to watch her. Mary Poppins is not my favorite musical so I didn't enjoy the overall production as much as I normally do.

New York City Sisters Trip

 In November, I was able to go on a short trip with my 3 sisters. It had been over a year overdue. We had decided to do the trip as a 60th birthday gift for Marjorie, but our schedules clashed for the fall right after her 6oth and we knew we wanted to go to either Connecticut (where she lives) or New York City in the fall. So we pushed it back a year and we still had trouble nailing down a weekend. As it was, we had to go either late in the fall season, or too early for colorful leaves. And then after we chose the second weekend in November, I found out that my boys had their primary program that Sunday. I felt bad missing it, especially since it was Tyler's last program, but we could not change the weekend. We settled on New York City because for Becky and I, it was cheaper to fly there than to Hartford. I flew out on Thursday with a layover in Denver. So Becky and I were able to be on the same flight out to LaGuardia. However, we both forgot to check in right away and because it was southwest we were both in the c group. We did not expect to be able to sit together which was kind of sad. But as we boarded, we were fortunate to find an empty row in the very back of the plane  

 

The flight was delayed, so we didn't land until after midnight (it was supposed to be around 10pm). I almost lost my phone after boarding the flight because I had left it at the help counter and they wouldn't let me leave the plane to go get it. Because we were in the back of the plane, I was able to tell the stewardess who happened to be right next to us and she was able to call to the outside of the plane and have them look for it and bring it to us. They brought it on, just as they were about to close the door. Phew! We got to our hotel, the Lombardy, around 1 am and got to bed as quickly as possible. 

We slept in and then took a walk in Central Park after waking up. 

Marjorie and Christy were coming in on the train around 1 that day, so we were trying to plan it out to be ready when they got there.  They ended up getting to the hotel a little earlier than we expected, so we were still getting ready. It was fun to all be together. I won't try to organize these pictures in order of what we did, but we spent the next 2 days seeing the touristy things that we hadn't all done before. These included times square, going to the top of the Rock, the Brooklyn Bridge, Washington Square, The Vessel, Chelsea Market, the 9-11 memorial site, central park, eating a lot of yummy food, and seeing some shows. We got around mostly on foot and on the subway. One of the days, we got a ticket for a hop on/hop off tour bus. The shows that we decided on were "Six" and "Water for Elephants." Six was fun, but I don't think Becky and Marjorie enjoyed it as much as Christy and I (who had both already seen it and had recommended it), We all LOVED Water for Elephants, though. It was still in its first year on Broadway, so I hope that it eventually goes on tour so that Danny can see it and I can go again. Here are the pictures:

The Vessel (we did not go up to the top, just looked from the outside)

I forget what this is called, but it was over by Chelsea market. It was this outdoor garden area right on the water.

Times Square was always packed, day or night.

Top of the Rock. This was the side facing central park. The other side had the Empire State Building, but the sun was in the background, so the pictures were not as good over there.

We walked A LOT. I think I had over 30000 steps every day we were there.

Water for Elephants! So good.

We got really good at the Subway. This was one of our crazier rides. I got separated from the others so I got a picture.

Our hop on/hop off bus tour. It was chilly, but fun to see a lot of places. We ran out of time to see everything we wanted to on this tour and ended up having to take the subway back to times square to get to our show on time.

We did a lot but also took advantage of some down time in the room to play 1 high together. It was so fun to spend this time together. We are making plans for our next trip for Becky's 50th birthday. 

Nemo Junior

Camden participated in the Fall play at the Lehi Arts Center. They did Nemo Junior which included puppets. Camden did not want to do the play after he found out that he would have no friends in the cast with him. So he ended up missing the first day of auditions, because we were hopeful that they would let him drop and refund us. Then we found out they would not refund us, so he got stuck doing it anyways. Somehow, he still got cast in a named part with lines and a little solo. He was one of the sidekick sharks-Chum. I was going to be out of town for most of his performances, but I was able to go to the 2 shows on opening day. Tyler went with me to one of them.

Chum is only in one of the scenes, so he got to be other little fish for some of the other scenes.

Brothers

He actually ended up having a lot of fun doing the play, but I will be sure not to sign him up again without a friend. The summer play was also a lot less of a time commitment, so we will probably try again for the summer.

Field Trip and Ninja Competition

I got to chaperone Tyler's field trip to Clark Planetarium the week after Halloween. I don't get to go on very many of the boy's field trips because of my work schedule and because the high number of parent volunteers, so I was excited that it worked out for this one. I was especially excited to go to Clark planetarium, since I have never been there.

It was a little chaotic keeping a group of 6th grade boys together, but most of the time was spent in the theaters there. First was the planetarium show and second was the IMAX show. In between the 2 shows, they got to explore all of the hands-on exhibits. This picture was in a room set up like the surface of Mars.

Tyler also competed in his first Ninja Warrior competition in November.  He was pretty nervous and he was like 23rd to go, so it was a lot of sitting around and waiting. When it was finally his turn, he rushed through some of the obstacles that we thought he should be able to do and missed the points on those. But it was a good experience for him to get a feel for future competitions.
